With complex bouquets of chemical signals, animals and plants are able to communicate, deceive, detect and defend.Dr Anne Gaskett from the University of Auckland studies the chemical ecology of insects, flowers, mosses and sea-birds. Her research uncovers the hidden languages flowers use to attract their pollinators, and mosses use to lure in their vectors.
